| Sub-Council meeting:Process Mapping Benchmarking exercise (HR, F&A) |
| 27 04, 2010 |
The recent economic reset has brought the spotlight back on performance and growth. While R&D spend will start increasing in the next few quarters, MNC R&D subsidiaries in India would continue to look for growth. Business support functions such as F&A and HR line functions are anticipated to play a key role in defining the momentum of growth. However, managing key accounting and HR processes is a complex function as they play a critical role in optimizing cost, enabling compliance and mitigating risks.
Realizing the increased need, Zinnov is kick starting a F&A Process Benchmarking study to help the Finance teams at India centers, to learn/ understand some of the key metrics and best practices around the critical Finance process such as Account Payable, Account Receivable, General Ledger, Payroll etc. Also HR Process Benchmarking study to help the HR teams at India centers, to learn/ understand some of the key metrics and best practices around the critical HR process such as employee interview, employee induction, joining, resignation, hiring, appraisal etc. The benchmarking exercise will serve as a vital tool towards best practices understanding, adoption and continuous improvement.

| As per a globalization study carried out by Zinnov in early 2010, ‘Cost’ still remains the key driver of Globalization in the mind of Headquarters. This session focuses on the different components of cost involved in running a product engineering center in India and explores what is being done by these centers to help them get the "bang for the invested buck" |
| 12:45 PM - 1:30 PM |
Global / Reverse Innovation – Driving the future |
| Over the last few months there have been sufficient indicators that global economies are starting to turn around. In the past year, Indian MNC R&D companies in order to withstand the recessionary phase, have started concentrating on the development of new R&D/Innovation rather than the simple absorption of existing technology from their parent companies. This discussion focuses on how some R&D centers are leveraging this opportunity and are innovating locally in India for global markets |

| 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM |
Maturity Benchmark- Moving up the Value Chain |
| The maturity benchmarking exercise is an extension of a framework developed by Zinnov –‘The Maturity Model’. This benchmarking exercise was carried out with 20 companies in different verticals like Enterprise Software, Embedded Software, Security, Semiconductor etc. and covered more than 280 products .The objective of the exercise is to help R&D subsidiaries assess the maturity of the India Center operations relative to their peers, identify gaps, if any, and also analyze trends that have enabled companies to move up the value curve. Some of the key trends observed include the fact that over 50% product teams operate in engineering support and about 25% product teams are transitioning to higher maturity while only 4% of the firms are in product leadership |

Consumability Index |
With the slowdown in the developed markets, many product companies are augmenting their focus on new, emerging and fast growing markets. While companies are aggressive on being innovative, they are increasingly looking to understand the relevance of innovation for the unique customers in these emerging geographies. The Consumability Index Framework, which was collaboratively developed by Zinnov and R&D Council Members, helps companies understand how consumable their products are across these markets and whether in the nascent, growth or mature phase. In other words, this creative framework helps them understand what will make their products work in these new but high growth markets.
This session will be a highly interactive simulation exercise that will allow participants test and validate this framework |
| 12:15 PM - 1:00 PM |
Peer Experiences - Success Stories |
| This first-of-its-kind initiative brings together some of our R&D Council Members to talk about their own experiences and strategies employed by their organizations, that have helped them move up the value chain. These short sessions are structured to be interactive and are aimed at helping R&D Council Members benefit from their peers' experiences |

Globally Mobile R&D Talent for Indian Centers |
This report aims to assess the currently installed R&D talent pool in the US and best practices and trends relating to expatriate mobility across major geographies like US, UK, France, Germany and Japan . The information is based on a survey carried out with 350 working professionals and students across these geographies as well as 50 interviews with key individuals with significant industry experience.
The discussion will predominantly focus on drivers for using expatriates from the perspective of both the companies and the professionals and will provide key insights and trends, for e.g., 40% of the professionals and 70% of the students showed willingness to relocate to India after working for a couple of years . Lastly, the challenges faced in using the expatriate model will also be covered |
| 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM |
Compensation and Benefits Study- 2010 |
While the economy is starting to show signs of upward movements, the recovery in the R&D growth has so far been slow. R&D centers are expected to provide salary increase in the range of 6 to 10% in 2010 based on their growth at the India center as well as the global performance of the company. From a location perspective, the gap in salaries between Bangalore and Pune has been bridged significantly and difference have decreased to 1% from 5% last year. In the current year, there has already been a spurt in attrition across companies, and those companies who had instated a hiring freeze over the last 1.5 years are starting to hire again. However, this is just market correction and overall attrition for the year is expected to stay below 10%.
This discussion will focus on providing a retrospective as well as a predictive outlook on the key trends pertaining to Compensation and Benefits in the Indian R&D context |
